Al Hamra Golf Club Launches Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Initiative During Troon Ability Month

August is a month dedicated to celebrating the diverse abilities of individuals and promoting inclusivity.  For us, supporting everyones experience at our golf clubs is incredibly important and ensuring people of abilities can try, enjoy and excel within the game of golf is a priority for us.

This year, Ability Month holds special significance at Al Hamra Golf Club who are proudly launching the Hidden DisabilitiesSunflower Initiative, made possible through the generous support of Al Hamra.

The Sunflower is a transformative program designed to support individuals with hidden disabilities. Hidden disabilities, unlike visible ones, are not immediately apparent but can have a profound impact on a person’s daily life. These can include conditions such as autism, chronic pain, anxiety, learning disabilities, and many more. The Sunflower symbol has become an internationally recognized sign for hidden disabilities. By wearing a Sunflower lanyard, badge, or accessory, individuals signal that they have a hidden disability and may require additional support or understanding from those around them. This simple yet effective symbol promotes empathy and inclusivity.

Al Hamra has long been a champion of community development and social responsibility. In March 2021, Al Hamra Golf Club held the regions first 24-hour charity golf event, with golfers of all levels playing golf continuously for 24-hours to raise funds for the Ras Al Khaimah Club for People of Determination and awareness of the work being done to support people of determination in the region.

Following that event, the club also hosted the Emirates Golf Foundation Determined Golfers Program, an initiative which helped to introduce golfers to the game.

Their support for the Sunflower at Al Hamra Golf Club underscores the continued dedication to fostering an inclusive environment for all. By backing this initiative, Al Hamra aims to create a welcoming and supportive space for individuals with hidden disabilities to explore golf.

Objectives of the Initiative

  1. Awareness and Education: Educate the community about hidden disabilities and the meaning of the Sunflower symbol.
  1. Support and Recognition: Provide a platform for individuals with hidden disabilities to feel acknowledged and supported.
  1. Community Engagement: Encourage local businesses, organizations, and individuals to adopt the Sunflower symbol and promote inclusive practices.

At Al Hamra Golf Club, the Sunflower will enhance the experience for members and visitors with hidden disabilities. The golf club staff have been trained to recognize the Sunflower symbol and provide the necessary support and accommodations. This initiative ensures that everyone can enjoy the facilities and activities at Al Hamra Golf Club with confidence and ease.

As we celebrate Ability Month this August, let us embrace the spirit of inclusivity and support for individuals with all types of disabilities. The launch of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower at Al Hamra Golf Club, supported by Al Hamra, marks a significant step towards a more understanding and compassionate community. Together, we can make a difference and create a world where everyone feels valued and included.
