Hk’s 44th Annual Golf Tournament Lake Of The Ozarks Open To Feature Golf Professional And Cancer Survivor Michael Castillo
LAKE OZARK, MO. (April 12, 2023) – HK’s 44th Annual Golf Tournament Lake of the Ozarks Open, scheduled for May 21 and 22, 2023 at The Lodge of Four Seasons and The Club at Porto Cima in Lake Ozark, Missouri, will feature Michael Castillo, the head golf professional at Kapalua Golf’s Plantation Course and a cancer survivor. The two-day event raises funds for Lake Regional Health Systems – more than $3.17 million has been raised in the tournament’s 43-year history.
Castillo, 60, has battled colon cancer for five years and the disease has progressed to his liver and lungs. He has been through chemotherapy and radiation. While at HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open, Castillo will participate in the golf tournament and take part in a Q&A focused on healthcare as well as his personal and professional journeys. In January, Castillo competed in the PGA TOUR’s Sony Open in Hawaii after winning the Aloha Section PGA Championship last September (he birdied the final hole to win by one). Then in March, Castillo received a sponsor exemption to play in the PGA TOUR Champions’ Cologuard Classic by Exact Sciences, an event that raises awareness about colon cancer and the importance of early detection. The Sony Open was Castillo’s PGA TOUR debut and the Cologuard Classic was his PGA TOUR Champions debut. Castillo has been the head golf professional at Kapalua’s Plantation Course since October 2019. He has 30 plus years of golf hospitality experience. Over that time, Castillo has led the golf operations at clubs throughout Hawaii and California, including TPC Valencia, Big Canyon Country Club, Princeville Makai Golf Club and Poipu Bay Golf Course.
HK’s Lake of the Ozarks Open includes two days of golf at The Cove golf course at The Lodge of Four Seasons and The Club at Porto Cima. Funds are raised through tournament sponsorships, entry fees, and virtual and live auctions. VIP tournament sponsors include Central Bank, The Lodge of Four Seasons, and Troon. Tournament proceeds support Lake Regional’s Commitment to Caring. Through this initiative, Lake Regional seeks to transform health care delivery for two vitally important services: heart care and cancer treatment services. To meet the growing needs of the region, Lake Regional plans to build a new Cardiac Institute and expanded Cancer Center.
In the early 1970s, a group of community-minded, lake-area residents realized the need for medical services to treat existing homeowners and the growing second homeowner, retiree and tourist populations. Then, the closest hospital was 50 miles away. Many people who suffered trauma, heart attacks or other serious health conditions did not survive because medical assistance was not immediately available. The Lodge of Four Seasons’ Founder Harold Koplar was one of the visionaries who believed the area needed a hospital. To help provide funding, the HK’s Annual Hospital Benefit Golf Tournament (named for Koplar) was established.
