Montgomery Golf Courses Welcome New General Manager

Montgomery, Alabama (July 11, 2022) – Shawn Freese has been named general manager of Lagoon Park and Gateway Park golf courses in Montgomery, Alabama. In his new role, Freese will work in partnership with Indigo Sports, a division of Troon, and the City of Montgomery to develop and implement a strategic vision for the golf facilities as well as oversee daily course operations.

Freese, a native of Montgomery, is an experienced golf operations manager and teaching professional with more than 14 years of experience working in the local golf community. Freese has served as head golf professional at Lagoon Park, and most recently at Gateway Park for more than 11 years. Prior to that, he worked at Cottonwood Golf Club in Montgomery, where he assisted in managing day-to-day golf operations and coordinating tournaments. In addition, he has also served as a department lead at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Montgomery, overseeing merchandising, golf equipment sales, and club fittings.

“Not only is Shawn dedicated to growing the game and enhancing the golf experiences at Lagoon Park and Gateway Park golf courses, he has also proven himself as a valuable asset to our team,” said Dana Schultz, Troon’s regional director of operations. “He has worked with the company for more than eleven years and knows and understands the Montgomery market. He also has an established record of producing results. We are excited to see him take these courses to a new level.”

Lagoon Park Golf Course, designed by Charles Graves of Atlanta, Georgia is a beautiful 18-hole public golf course featuring a traditional layout and a lighted practice range. It has been nationally recognized by Golf Digest’s Places to Play, as well as hosted the annual Capital City Golf Classic. The city-owned golf course is part of a multi-purpose sports facility complete with a softball complex and tennis center.

Gateway Park Golf Course features a 9-hole golf course layout, practice range and large practice area. The facility provides seasonal adult and junior clinics along with private golf instruction. In addition to golf, Gateway Park also offers FootGolf and is one of three courses in the state certified by the American FootGolf League (AFGL).

Since 2010, Lagoon Park and Gateway Park golf courses have been managed by Honours Golf, a legacy division of Troon. As part of Troon’s new brand architecture, the company’s Indigo Sports division now manages both courses.
