The Evolution of the Patriot Cup
The Folds of Honor fundraiser began as a Pro-Am tournament, offering a unique experience where amateur players could team up with golf professionals in a day of camaraderie and spirited competition. Over the years, the format evolved to a traditional scramble style event, increasing its accessibility and appeal to golfers of all skill levels. This evolution has allowed more participants to join the cause, broadening the reach of the fundraiser and amplifying its impact.
Despite the changes in format, the heart of the event has remained constant: to honor and support those who have sacrificed for our country. Each year, participants gather not just to enjoy a day on the links but to make a tangible difference in the lives of military families.
A Signature Event at Monarch Beach Golf Links
For the team at Monarch Beach Golf Links, the Patriot Cup is more than just a tournament; it’s a signature event that embodies the course’s commitment to community and service. From the inaugural fundraiser to today’s highly anticipated annual tradition, Monarch Beach has been there every step of the way.
Jackie Riegle, PGA, the course’s Director of Marketing and Player Development, has been the cornerstone of this event since its inception. Behind the scenes, Jackie wears many hats: tournament organizer, silent auction manager, sign designer, and so much more. Her dedication and meticulous attention to detail have ensured the success of the Patriot Cup year after year.
Eric Lohman, PGA, General Manager of Monarch Beach Golf Links and current SCPGA President, has also played a pivotal role. Serving on the board of the Southern California Folds of Honor for seven of the event’s ten years, Eric has helped guide and grow this fundraiser into the powerhouse it is today. His leadership and collaboration with the SCPGA have been instrumental in rallying support, sponsorships, and participants.
“The Patriot Cup is a true team effort,” Jackie shares. “It’s incredible to see everyone come together—staff, board members, sponsors, and golfers—all with the shared goal of making a real difference.”
A Collective Effort
One of the key factors behind the event’s success is the collective effort of the Southern California Folds of Honor board. Their ability to gather sponsorships and attract golfers year after year is a testament to their dedication and influence within the community. The board’s commitment to the Folds of Honor mission extends far beyond the event itself, fostering relationships and opportunities that drive the fundraiser’s continued growth.
Monarch Beach’s team members also play a vital role. From course preparations to day-of logistics, their hard work and enthusiasm ensure a seamless experience for all involved. This dedication reflects the course’s culture of excellence and its deep connection to the local community.
A Highlight of the Event: The Scholarship Recipients
While the day is filled with memorable moments, none is more impactful than hearing from the Folds of Honor scholarship recipients. Each year, a recipient shares their story, providing a powerful reminder of the lives changed by the event’s fundraising efforts. Their speeches often leave the room in tears, underscoring the profound impact of the scholarships.
“These moments bring everything into perspective,” Eric Lohman says. “Hearing directly from the families we’re helping is incredibly moving and a reminder of why we do this.”
The Impact of Ten Years
Over the past decade, the Patriot Cup has not only raised millions of dollars but also cultivated a sense of unity and purpose among its participants. The funds raised have provided countless scholarships, helping families turn dreams of education into reality. These scholarships serve as a lasting tribute to the sacrifices made by military families and a testament to the generosity of the Southern California golf community.
Looking ahead, Monarch Beach Golf Links and the Southern California Folds of Honor remain committed to growing the Patriot Cup and continuing their support for Folds of Honor. The event’s success is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together for a cause larger than themselves.
A Legacy of Service
As the Patriot Cup enters its second decade, its legacy as a cornerstone event at Monarch Beach Golf Links is firmly established. For Jackie Riegle, Eric Lohman, and the entire team, it’s a source of pride and purpose—a reminder of the power of golf to bring people together and effect meaningful change.
“To us, this event is more than a fundraiser,” Jackie reflects. “It’s a celebration of service, sacrifice, and community. We’re honored to play a part in supporting these families and look forward to many more years of making a difference.”
In the world of golf, few events can claim the heart and impact of the Patriot Cup. It stands as a testament to the generosity and compassion of the Southern California golf community and a beacon of hope for the families it supports.
