The Grove, UK, 06 Feb 2024: The Grove, one of the UK’s premier hotel and golf resorts, has announced the promotion of existing Head of Golf Sales, Joel Westwell, to the role of Director of Golf.

Having been part of the team for over six years, Westwell steps into the new leadership role with a rich history at The Grove, bringing a wealth of experience and deep understanding of the resort’s intricate golf operations.

He replaces Brad Gould, who leaves The Grove after 17 years to begin a new position as Managing Director at The National Golf Centre at Woodhall Spa.

As Director of Golf, Westwell aims to leverage his experience and insights in the industry to enhance The Grove’s overall golfing experience, steering the resort to new heights, and showcasing its incredible facilities to a global audience.

Upon completion of his degrees, he immersed himself in the industry by joining Trump Aberdeen as a caddy during its opening season, a move that laid the groundwork for a multifaceted career.

His love for The Grove began in 2017 when he joined as a Golf Events Manager, a decision he describes as the point he never looked back. Progressing through various roles, including Golf Sales Manager and Head of Golf Sales, he has a deep connection with the resort, a place he considers ‘home’, especially after spending 50 nights consecutively there amid the challenges of the Covid pandemic.

Speaking upon his appointment to the role, Joel Westwell said: “Becoming Director of Golf at The Grove is a dream come true, one that I am extremely honoured by. We have the most outstanding team across all our departments that offer world-class service and hospitality all-year round.

“I very much look forward to supporting the entire team in any way I can and further improving the experience we offer by building on the legacy created by my predecessors and working with our exceptional team to maintain the highest standards.”

Anna Darnell, Resort Director at The Grove, added: “Joel’s exceptional expertise, passion for the game, and commitment to delivering an unparalleled experience aligns perfectly with our ongoing vision for the resort. With his leadership, we are confident that our golfing community will flourish, and The Grove will continue to be the go-to destination for both seasoned enthusiasts and newcomers to the sport.”

After originally aspiring to become a tournament golfer, Joel Westwell achieved a foundation degree in Tournament Golf at Duchy College in Cornwall, before successfully earning a qualification in Rural Business Management from the University of Glasgow.

Upon completion of his degrees, he immersed himself in the industry by joining Trump Aberdeen as a caddy during its opening season, a move that laid the groundwork for a multifaceted career.

This led to him transitioning through numerous positions, from supporting the Golf Operations team and winter responsibilities in the boutique hotel’s Guest Services to becoming a Golf Coordinator with a focus on events. A pivotal move to the Sales & Marketing team followed, where he contributed significantly to the launch of a new membership programme, before moving on to join The Grove.

Last year, The Grove celebrated its 20th anniversary, securing its reputation as one of the best golf and lifestyle resorts in the UK, renowned for its quality guest experience, exceptional service, inclusivity, and an ‘open to all’ attitude.
