NorthRiver Yacht Club Welcomes New Executive Chef

Tuscaloosa, Ala. (January 27, 2025) – NorthRiver Yacht Club in Tuscaloosa, Alabama recently welcomed Jonathan Mitchell as its new Executive Chef. Chef Jonathan will lead the culinary operations for the private club’s two dining venues, including The Grille at NorthRiver and the dining room in NorthRiver’s main clubhouse.

With 20-plus years of experience, Mitchell is a seasoned professional having led the culinary operations at multiple restaurants and private clubs in Mississippi, Texas and Florida. He comes to NorthRiver Yacht Club from Tampa, Fla., where he worked alongside his mentor, Chef David Morris, to reopen Packard’s Steakhouse at Innisbrook Resort. Prior to Innisbrook, Mitchell served as the Executive Chef at Reunion Golf and Country Club in Madison, Mississippi. Throughout Mitchell’s culinary journey, he has excelled at making delicious Southern food, and NorthRiver will be no exception. He loves recreating the Southern dishes he enjoyed as a kid but is no stranger to cooking a variety of cuisines and fusing flavors.

“We are thrilled to announce Jonathan Mitchell as our new Executive Chef,” said NorthRiver Yacht Club General Manager Carl Bielstein. “He is a true professional and has a genuine passion for connecting with members through exceptional dining experiences. Chef Jonathan brings a fresh perspective and creative energy to our Club’s culinary team.”

Mitchell picked up his love of cooking from his grandmothers and cooking with his family. His mother furthered his culinary passion from an early age, taking him to the grocery store and encouraging him to choose the groceries to prepare one dinner for mom, dad, and himself. From there, it was only natural for Mitchell to pursue a degree in Culinary Arts from Hinds Community College in Raymond, Mississippi and eventually a bachelor’s degree from Mississippi University for Women. After gaining experience at different restaurants and clubs in Mississippi, Mitchell chose to return to Hinds Community College, preferring the consistent hours of the college kitchen so he could be active in raising his then two young children.

When Chef Jonathan is not in the kitchen, you can find him on the golf course or attending a sporting event. He and his wife, Jamie, have been married for 22 years and have two children together, Jewel and Jax.

NorthRiver Yacht Club serves as a training and education center for college students from The University of Alabama’s Restaurant, Hotel, and Meetings Management Program, developing future golf and hospitality industry leaders in a real-world setting.
